She has just caught and nommed the fly that's been incessantly buzzing around my hair. I have rarely been so grateful to her.

In other Operation Keep Eating news, I have made banana cake! Banana cake is good for you, because it has flour and bananas and eggs, which are all part of a healthy balanced diet, and it has baking soda dissolved in hot milk, which is Science.

I have also washed the dishes (in the mixing bowl because boiling enough water to fill the sink would take literally forever due to the fact that it would cool down while the next jugful was boiling) and shovelled/brushed/washed the liquefaction silt off the paving stones in my backyard. (Now remains the patch of silt in the middle of the lawn, which I hope will eventually get washed back to ground level, and the sand dune that used to be my parsley patch, which I'll either remediate somehow or plant with tussocks and other sand-dunish plants.)

I do most of my washing up with the left-over hot water from tea making which I store in a thermos flask. I do have running hot water, but it takes about five minutes to clear the lines (which go around the block twice), so if I run the hot tab I'm standing in the kitchen watching good water go down the drain for that time (less in summer, more in winter) - the thermos is a quick-and-clean solution.

Also, one kettle full of boiling water will make enough handwarm water do do the washing up - you're no trying to boil them, you need to comfortably dip your hands in it.

All the water I use at present has to have been boiled at some point, though, since all tapwater at the moment is potentially contaminated with sewerage. So I need previously boiled water which has cooled down enough to mix with freshly boiled water to make handwarm sterile water.

Ah, yes, the 'all water needs to be boiled' would definitely be an additional logistical problem.

Becky here. Cheers for Boots! I'm certain she'll nail that other fly. All three of ours are mighty hunters, and they've been rather prolific with the mouse hunting of late -- sadly, Sophie will play with hers, with Phantom joining in the fun until the poor mouse is boring. They let it run around a little, then do it all over again. Mu at least will dispatch them quickly and tidily. And then he expects mashed potatoes as a treat...
