zeborah: Zebra with stripes shaking (earthquake)

4.6 in the middle of the night. I called it. Well, no, I pulled the pillow tight over my head because it was bigger than usual, and then I went back to sleep, and then a while later Boots came to snuggle, and then I woke with a start to what seems to have been merely a 2.9, which sent Boots under the bed for the rest of the night. But when I was in the shower I concluded, "Either that was a 4.6 or I dreamed we had a 4.6," because my memory of it has got(1) that dreamlike cast to it.

Now I'm vaguely wondering if my experience of the 2.9 was a dream instead, and it was just me starting awake that startled Boots, because 2.9 is tiny. But I'm sure I both heard and felt it.

I've reached a point where the idea of living without aftershocks seems very weird. It probably won't be weird by the time they've all run their course, but right now it's more or less, "House shaking, oh, whatever."

Consciously, anyway. Subconsciously... Today I had to leave work for half an hour and take an impromptu stroll around campus because I can deal with the constant noise of 100 students crowded into a single floor of a three-floor building; and I can deal with the constant noise of construction overhead; and consciously I can even deal with it when they keep dropping heavy loads upstairs with a great thump-shudder, but all of a sudden my subconscious communicated to my conscious that enough was enough.

Much better now, and shortly it's the weekend.
(1) I originally typed "gone" and a day or two ago I noticed myself typing "bag" for "back" and a couple of other similar mistakes. If that's a symptom of weariness it's one of the weirder ones I've ever noticed.
