In which she doesn't enjoy irony

zeborahI just tweeted Gah fixing battle scene gah! Otoh, yay for Google Maps and Panoramio so I know the layout of the place modulo 5 centuries. But mostly gah.
(Here's a map and here's my inspiration photo but I have to ignore the architecture because pace Torchwood, the sixteenth century is when everything changes. --Well, okay, in this particular case the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but my point remains.)
And then I went to eat a biscuit and wash the sink, and the irony of this particular scene struck me.
See, one of the things that was terrifying me about this book was that it was about a war and I didn't want to write action scenes. And over the last few years of writing the damn thing my backbrain has painstakingly slided every potential battle scene away from the necessity of actually appearing on paper.
And then this scene, which was supposed to be a bunch of people turning up at this guy's castle, and the guy banging his head against a desk and then going out resignedly to meet them... has suddenly morphed into someone turning up, starting a small peasants' rebellion, and storming the castle.
And okay, it's going to be over with within a page or so (yay for betrayal from within) but still.
