It used to be, where's my flying car. The real answer to that is, of course, that while a flying car is technologically feasible (there are working prototypes), in the current air-traffic control system it just isn't possible to handle the sort of massive aerial traffic generated by millions of private airplanes (what flying cars really are) commuting daily from the house to work.

Hoverboards seem to me to be the ultimate useless gadget. Why spend a lot of effort to get a few centimeters off the ground when wheels quite satisfactory method to get essentially the same experience. (Though, of course, prototypes already exist. But they are either just attempts to be cool or a stepping-stone to other, more useful technology.)

I have nothing to add to your excellent social commentary :)
